ANNA Nicole Smith died in mysterious circumstances, but her life was one of tragedy and controversy. How did her life spiral out of control?

Prior to 1994:
Anna Nicole Smith was a topless dancer.
1994:
Anna Nicole Smith marries 89-year-old Texas oil magnate J. Howard Marshall II when she was 26.
1995:
J. Howard Marshall II dies.
1999:
Named a Playboy Playmate.
2001:
Anna Nicole Smith's will, in Smith's real name of Vicky Lynn Marshall, is signed on July 30.
June 23, 2006:
The man who spent more than a decade battling Smith over his father's oil fortune dies unexpectedly. E. Pierce Marshall, 67, died of an 'extremely aggressive infection'.
September 7, 2006:
Anna Nicole's daughter, Dannielynn, is born in the Bahamas.
September 10, 2006:
Smith's son Daniel dies in the Bahamas. Private investigator Jack E. Harding says Daniel, 20, came to him before he died with fears Anna Nicole was being held 'a virtual prisoner' in the Bahamas. But Daniel never followed through in hiring the detective. 'Daniel felt (Anna's lover Howard K.) Stern was keeping her on mind-bending drugs, even though she was pregnant,' Harding said. Just three hours before his mysterious death, Anna Nicole Smith's son was playing with his newborn sister. But by 9.30am, Daniel Smith, 20, was covered in blood and vomit and dead in his mother's hospital room. A private examiner concluded he died from a lethal combination of methadone and two antidepressants.
February 8:
Anna Nicole Smith is found dead in her hotel room in Hollywood, Florida. The cause of her death is still being investigated. Smith, 39, a former model and reality television star, died after a night of heavy partying. Investigators said her hotel room resembled a pharmacy. Just hours before she died, Smith was at the Seminole Hard Rock hotel and casino's 24-hour Centre Bar on the casino floor. A bartender named Mike said the former Playboy centrefold was tossing back double shots.
February 9:
A preliminary report is released by Dr. Joshua Perper, Broward County medical examiner. Dr. Perper reported then that more tests were needed in order to have definitive proof of the cause of death. The initial autopsy results revealed no evidence of a prescription drug overdose. Unidentified prescription drugs were found in Smith's hotel room, but no illegal drugs were found. The autopsy also revealed inflammation of Anna Nicole Smith's heart. The coroner reported that the inflammation may or may not be an important piece of evidence. Initial investigations by authorities resulted in no evidence of foul play.
February 17:
Anna Nicole Smith tried to kill herself twice after the death of her son last year, a former nanny claims in court documents. Quethlie Alexis said Smith had spent 48 hours in a coma after drinking a whole bottle of what she believed to be a sleeping aid and also tried to drown herself in the swimming pool at her Bahamas mansion.
February 18:
Anna Nicole Smith's body is embalmed. The date of Smith's will is significant because it was before 20-year-old Daniel died in the Bahamas in September last year and the birth a few days earlier of Danniellynn.
February 20:
Bahamas Immigration Minister Shane Gibson resigns amid controversy over his relationship with Anna Nicole Smith. Photos appeared in a Bahamas newspaper showing Mr Gibson and the former Playboy playmate embracing on a bed. Both were fully clothed, but the appearance of the pictures stoked a controversy because Mr Gibson had fast-tracked her application for permanent residency on the island chain.
February 22:
Smith's friend Ford Shelley testifies in Broward Circuit Court that Smith had entrusted him with protecting her personal belongings. 'She said, 'Ford, if something ever happens to me, take the computers and passports,' he said. 'She gave me the password.'
February 23:
Smith's body is still in cold storage at the Broward Medical Examiner's Office.
March 3:
Wearing a tiara and pink beaded custom-made gown, Anna Nicole Smith is finally laid to rest despite a last-minute legal challenge by her mother to halt the bizarre Hollywood-style funeral in the Bahamas at the Mount Horeb Baptist Church in Nassau. Just hours earlier, Smith's estranged mother, Virgie Arthur, had unsuccessfully applied in a Bahamas court to stop her 39-year-old daughter's burial and gain access to her body. Arthur wanted the body to be buried in Texas, while Stern and Milstein wanted the body to be buried in the Bahamas. Twenty-two days after her death and a string of bitterly fought court battles, Smith was buried next to the man she called the love of her life, her son, Daniel. An urn containing portions of the ashes of her late husband, 90-year-old billionaire J. Howard Marshall, was placed inside her coffin.
March 10:
Broward Country Medical Examiner Dr Joshua Perper says a 'new piece of evidence' could change his conclusions on Smith's death. He previously said he was unable to state what killed the celebrity. It emerged yesterday the new piece of evidence could be on Smith's computer. It might take another two weeks before Dr Perper is ready to deliver his findings.
March 11:
Since Smith died, many of the tourists in the Bahamas who disembark from cruise liners at Nassau each day have been asking for the 'Anna Nicole tour' as part of their day on New Providence island The Anna Nicole tour starts at Doctors Hospital in Nassau, where her son Daniel died in September only days after she gave birth to daughter Dannielynn. From there it weaves up to Lake View cemetery, where Daniel and now Anna are buried.
March 15:
Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband sues US cable network Fox and host Bill O'Reilly after the outspoken commentator called Prince Frederic von Anhalt a fraud for claiming he could be the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby. Von Anhalt filed the defamation action yesterday seeking at least $12 million in damages. The claim stems from comments O'Reilly made during a February 22 broadcast of his show The O'Reilly Factor. Last month von Anhalt filed legal documents seeking a DNA test to determine if he was the father of Smith's baby girl Dannielynn. He has claimed he carried on a decade-long affair with Smith. Two other men also claim to be the father, Smith's former boyfriend Larry Birkhead and her most recent companion Howard K. Stern, whose name appears on the baby's birth certificate.
March 21:
A judge in the Bahamas orders a DNA test on Anna Nicole Smith's infant daughter to identify the girl's father, a lawyer for Smith's mother said. The move could signal an end to a bitter custody feud sparked by the death of the former pin-up last month. Larry Birkhead, an ex-boyfriend of the Playboy playmate, asked the judge to order the test on Dannielynn.
March 22:
A German businessman pays more than $630,000 for Anna Nicole Smith's private thoughts on sex, partying and her dead cat. The late Playboy model's handwritten 1992 diary was sold for $350,500 and her 1994 diary went for $285,000 in an eBay auction, with a 20 per cent buyer's premium. The buyer of both diaries, who wished to remain anonymous, reportedly plans to sell the information in the diary to various media outlets and then probably will resell them by the end of the year. The 'soap opera value' of the 15-year-old information could be worth more than $1.24 million alone, including the rights to publish photos of the pages which contain numerous misspellings.
March 24:
News breaks that Anna Nicole Smith may have died of septicemia, a toxic blood infection. The death, according to reports, may also have been due to an overdose of the sedative chloral hydrate. The infection Anna Nicole was fighting at the time of her death followed the injection of an unknown substance into her left buttock three days prior to her death. The needle used in the Bahamas procedure was evidently unsterilised and lead to a painful abscess and the poison that spread through her body. (source: Lawfuel.com)
March 27:
Official autopsy results due (3.30am, Tuesday AEST). Baby Dannielynn stands to inherit hundreds of millions of dollars from her mother's estate.

The resort currently has a 12-story 'classic Hard Rock Hotel'[7] with 469 guest rooms and suites.[8] Guests are greeted by a 50-foot (15 m) tall signature Hard Rock guitar, (based on a famous Gibson electric guitar model) at the entrance of the hotel, along with a massive LED advertising screen at the front of the main parking garage. The resort has 120,000-square-foot (11,000 m2) of meeting space, including a 38,000-square-foot (3,500 m2) exhibit hall.

The Hard Rock's $1.5 billion property expansion project is adding a 450-foot (140 m) 'Guitar Hotel'[9] with 638 rooms and a seven-story 168-room 'Oasis Tower' overlooking the pool cabanas[7]—as of June 2019, these new buildings are scheduled to open on October 24, 2019,[6] several months in advance of Super Bowl LIV being held in Miami on February 2, 2020. There will also be a 42,000-square-foot (3,900 m2) 'Rock Spa', and over 20 new dining and nightlife destinations. Between the existing 12-story hotel, new Guitar Hotel, and new Oasis Tower, over 1,200 hotel rooms are to be available by the end of 2019.[7]

On May 9, 2014, Seminole chairman James Billie announced a $100 million upgrade of the tribe's casinos, with much of that spent on the Hard Rock Hollywood location, including an improved entryways, center pool bar, pool facility upgrades, updated hotel room and suite interiors, and a new restaurant.[10] As of March 2019, the tribe's upgrade budget was significantly increased to over $2.4 billion, split mainly between this location and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa.[11]

Casino[edit]

The current casino layout covers over 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) featuring slot machines and various table games including blackjack, baccarat, mini baccarat, Pai Gow poker, Let It Ride and three card poker.[12] The casino does not have live craps and roulette, although there are electronic versions of those games available. As of June 2018, the poker room is located in a former ballroom area, relocated from its prior venue due to ongoing construction work.

Blackjack is the most popular card game in the United States and was an addition to the casino. In a deal valued at $1.1 billion, former Governor Charlie Crist gave the Seminole Tribe a license for blackjack in its casinos. In exchange, The Seminole Tribe loaned the State of Florida $1.1 billion over the course of two years. On July 3, 2008, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the governor's agreement was unconstitutional, but table games continue to operate because the Federal Department of the Interior approved the now-invalid pact with the state.[13] The addition of blackjack to the Hard Rock casinos in Hollywood and Tampa gave credibility to its claim of being a major gambling destination.[14]

Entertainment[edit]

Hard Rock Live[edit]

Hard Rock Live is a 7,000 seat multi-purpose theater, which opened on October 25, 2019 with a concert by Maroon 5. The theater replaced a 5,500 seat arena of the same name, which hosted different types of events including musical acts, comedians, boxing and other smaller events, along with a residency by Billy Joel. The arena was razed in March 2018 as part of the property-wide expansion which included the new theater.[15] During construction of the new theater, events were held at the temporary 3,500 seat Hard Rock Event Center, which hosted acts like Britney Spears on her Piece of Me Tour.[16]

Notable incidents[edit]

Model, actress, and TV personality Anna Nicole Smith, who was staying at the resort, died in her hotel room on February 8, 2007. Smith's death was declared an accidental overdose on sleeping medication.[17]
